Cigarette Ephemera 1800 - 1960
“Examples of nineteenth and twentieth century packaging materials including cigarette boxes, cigarette cards, balls of crochet cotton, boxes for camera film, other small boxes. These items were acquired by the graphic designer Charles Hasler and used as reference for his own work.” -MODA (http://www.moda.mdx.ac.uk/results?adv_text=cigarette&x=0&y=0&session=5iWkmRc9I2i&mi_search_type=adv&per_page=25&mi_adv_search=yes)

I find this collection of Ephemera the most interesting to me because as a smoker there has been a drastic change recently and over the years in packaging. For example the Airman cigarette packing uses classic Air Force branding in order to market to its consumers. We can compare this to modern day packaging where it’s brown and generic with health warnings plastered all over. As science and society has moved forward the health implications of smoking have become more known. Whereas in the 1950’s smoking was glamorised and “recommended by Dentists”, we know that it causes cancer and other health implications that are very harmful to the body.
